CHAPTER S IX
They
rode back to his house in silence. Logan looked ready to explode. Dani dared not touch him or say anything that might ignite the fuse. His selfimposed restraint was visible. He was so tense, he seemed to have expanded, testing the ability of his clothes to contain him.
"I thought we'd have a late dinner." He unlocked the front door and ushered her in before him.
She turned. His eyes were fairly smoking. "That's fine. I'm not hungry."
"I'll ... I have some things to do down here before ... Why don't you go on up and I'll join you?" "All right, fine."
He touched her cheek. "I won't be long."
As she was making her way upstairs she suddenly
knew she would leave. Now. Before anything happened. She closed the door to the guest room and leaned against it, wondering where she would get the strength to leave him again. The thought filled her with anguish. She pressed her fists to her temples.
Oh, she wanted to stay. She wanted to lie with Logan and share with him not only her body, but all the love she had retained for ten years.
Her heart and soul could belong to him if he wanted them. It wouldn't be a passing fancy, a shooting star that would shine brilliantly for an instant before burning itself out. Wasn't she being terribly naive? Logan wouldn't have such an idealistic view of their loving. He was no longer the fresh-faced young Romeo, fervently and eagerly in love with his Juliet. He was no longer the bridegroom anticipating the wedding night when he would make his virgin bride his wife.
He had known countless women. He took them

and spurned them as the mood suited him. For him, this wouldn't be an act of love, but only the payoff for a debt long owed him. If he truly loved her, why hadn't he slept with her before now? Did it stand to reason that he would pull back time and again, restraining his own passion, if he wasn't maliciously playing with her, fattening her up for the kill as if she were one of his corn-fed Herefords?
Well, she wasn't a dumb animal to be led blissfully ignorant to the slaughter! Dani felt her heartache giving way to anger, and she welcomed it. Anger would give her the impetus she needed to do what she must. Gathering up her things and shoving them into her suitcases, she fueled her actions with bitterness.
Surely Logan wouldn't bargain over the wellbeing of unfortunate children? He would eventually see their foolish deal for what it was.
